Humans are natural story tellers-- and the stories we tell ourselves about the things that happen to us-- the Big T & little t traumas-- the violations, losses, rejections, fears, anxieties and more, get locked into our bodies through repetition of thoughts, memories, stories. These stories cause us to attach deeply to & create meaning from them, altering the way we see ourselves & the world, over time. Our stories carry an emotional weight, baggage, residue, charge, which strengthens their power, pulling us further away from the present moment, and further away from being IN our bodies--from the experience of being embodied, as well as away from feeling safety IN our body.
Nervous system regulation is about building a collaborative relationship with our felt sense, aka, our bodily knowing. We expand our capacity to sit with/be present for all our emotions, while maintaining a sense of safety, aka capacity, to do so. Through the use of somatic practices & practicing presence, rather than avoiding, ignoring, bypassing, numbing out, we can begin to divest from the stories that have come to define us. We release the emotional charge held in the body and all the harmful consequences therein (unhealthy thought patterns, emotional blocks, limiting beliefs, disrupted relationships & dysregulated/reactionary behaviors, and physiological manifestations caused by holding onto these unprocessed emotions).
As we activate healing we begin to cultivate emotional intelligence, resiliency & capacity, and ultimately, SELF AGENCY--the ability to live responsively and sovereignly, with self determination.
Somatic R/evolution is a trauma informed movement practice that offers a dynamic, multi-faceted approach to healing and wellbeing— an opportunity to “Come OM to your body”, refining our present moment awareness using ancient technologies!
A curated playlist will guide us through an hourish of breath work, meditations, somatic postures, inspired mantras, and expressive movement. Working from the "bottom up", we use the body as the entry point to healing rather than engaging with the stories in the mind used in the top down, psychotherapeutic approach.
These classes are a super fun, innovative & non-invasive way to:
• move our bodies for joy, liberation & vitality
• increase the flexibility & suppleness of our nervous system to become responsive rather than reactive
• learn to be present, sit with & listen to our feelings instead of distracting, bypassing & ruminating on our stories or how we think about how we feel
This method can be modified to any body type and ability. You do not need any prior knowledge or experience to participate. Wear comfortable layered clothing and prepare to move & be moved! (You can expect a full range of motion from vigorous to stillness and all points in between, in every class) Bring your water bottle and an open mind— this is not your typical movement experience!
